About Dr. Stephan Neff

For years, I worked at the sharp end of medicine.

Operating theatres. Critical decisions. Patients at their most vulnerable.

As a specialist anaesthetist and pain physician, my role was to guide people safely through surgery, trauma, and severe pain. I became highly skilled at managing crises — but over time, a deeper question kept surfacing:

Why were so many people unwell long before they ever reached the operating table?

That question changed everything.

I’m Dr. Stephan Neff, a licensed medical doctor in New Zealand, a retired specialist anaesthetist (MD, FANZCA), and former Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine (FFPMANZCA). After decades in conventional medicine, I began looking beyond symptoms, scans, and prescriptions — and toward root causes.

That search led me into functional medicine.

Not as a rejection of modern medicine — but as an expansion of it.

Through advanced training and coursework with the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) and the Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (ACNEM), I deepened my understanding of how lifestyle, environment, nutrition, stress, trauma, and biology intersect to shape health over a lifetime. I remain an active member of both organisations, continually learning in a field that is evolving as fast as chronic illness itself.

Functional medicine taught me something conventional medicine rarely slows down enough to ask:

What happened to you — and what is your body still trying to adapt to?

Neff Inspiration exists to explore those questions.

It’s a space for people who feel unheard.
For those who suspect there’s more to their health story.
For anyone who knows, deep down, that symptoms are signals — not the enemy.

Here, I share insights from medicine, functional health, lived experience, and recovery — not quick fixes or false promises, but ideas that invite reflection, curiosity, and responsibility. Because real change doesn’t start with a pill. It starts with understanding.

Your genes may load the gun.
Your lifestyle pulls the trigger.
And awareness? That’s where the safety catch lives.

If you’re ready to think differently about health, healing, and what’s truly possible — you’re in the right place.
