I'm Stephan.
I spent much of my career as a specialist anaesthetist. In many ways, I was the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff, looking after people when they were critically ill or badly injured.
Then I discovered functional medicine and became increasingly interested in another question: how did people end up at the bottom of the cliff in the first place?
That curiosity changed the direction of my medicine. Today I work in functional and integrative medicine, with particular interests in metabolic health, healthy ageing, environmental medicine and integrative cancer care.
But medicine isn’t the whole story.
I have also been the patient. I have lived through trauma, addiction and recovery, and have spoken and written openly about those experiences for many years. Being on the other side of medicine taught me things that medical school never did.
These days I speak about both worlds: the science of what happens inside us, and the rather more complicated business of being human.
I don’t have all the answers. I’m increasingly suspicious of anyone who says they do.
But I remain enormously curious.
