Himalayan Salt: A Pinch of Wellness or Just Another Fad?

February 5, 2025

Yesterday, I saw yet another “health expert” touting the benefits of Himalayan salt with a near-religious fervor. You know the type—talking about its mystical properties like it’s been blessed by ancient monks on a mountaintop. “It’s packed with essential minerals!” they declare. “It balances your electrolytes!” they promise. “It’s the key to optimal hydration!” they chant.

Look, I love a good natural remedy as much as the next person, but let’s take a step back and actually look at what’s in this fancy pink salt. Because while it may be aesthetically pleasing, it’s not exactly the miracle cure some make it out to be.

The Salty Truth

So, let’s say you’re adding one pinch of Himalayan salt per glass of water. You’re a responsible hydration hero and drink 2 liters of water a day, split into 8 glasses (250 ml each). That means you’re using 8 pinches of salt a day.

The Salty Math:

Each pinch is about 0.75 grams of salt, so:
👉 8 pinches = 6 grams of salt

What’s Actually in That Salt?

Himalayan salt isn’t just fancy pink dust—it’s got some minerals too. Here’s what’s in those 6 grams:

  • Sodium: 2,400 mg (that’s a little over the daily limit!)
  • Calcium: 10 mg (barely a dent in what you need)
  • Magnesium: 3 mg (you’d need a truckload more to hit your daily goal)
  • Potassium: 17 mg (cute, but nowhere near enough)

So, Is It Really That Special?

  • Sodium Overload? You’re already over the daily recommended limit. If you’ve got high blood pressure or your doctor keeps giving you “the look” about your salt intake, this might not be the best idea.
  • Other Minerals? If you were hoping this salt would solve all your mineral problems—sorry to burst your bubble. These amounts are so tiny, they might as well be sprinkled on top of a wish.

What’s a Smarter Move?

If you actually want to replenish electrolytes (without just overloading on sodium), try:
🥬 Leafy greens (hello, magnesium)
🥜 Nuts & seeds (more magnesium, some calcium)
🍌 Bananas (potassium powerhouse)
💊 Balanced electrolyte supplements (because science actually made some useful stuff)

The Bottom Line

Look, if you like Himalayan salt because it’s pretty and makes your steak taste better—fantastic, enjoy it. But if you think it’s going to single-handedly turn you into a peak-performance machine, you might want to rethink your strategy. Hydration is important, but let’s not turn a pink rock into a holy grail.
