Oil Wars: Which Cooking Oils Are Ruining Your Omega-6 to Omega-3 Balance?

Here’s a list of commonly used seed oils and their approximate omega-6 to omega-3 ratios. These ratios can vary slightly depending on factors like processing and specific oil brands, but the following offers a general guide:

1. Soybean Oil

  • Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio: 7:1
  • Soybean oil contains a moderate amount of omega-3 compared to other seed oils, but still a high proportion of omega-6.

2. Corn Oil

  • Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio: 46:1
  • Corn oil is predominantly high in omega-6, with a very minimal amount of omega-3, making it heavily imbalanced.

3. Sunflower Oil

  • Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio: 200:1 (high-oleic varieties)
  • Traditional sunflower oil contains almost no omega-3s, but high-oleic sunflower oil varieties can be even more skewed toward omega-6.

4. Safflower Oil

  • Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio: 78:1
  • Safflower oil is another seed oil that is rich in omega-6 with negligible omega-3 content.

5. Cottonseed Oil

  • Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio: 258:1
  • Cottonseed oil has a significant imbalance, favoring omega-6 almost exclusively.

6. Sesame Oil

  • Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio: 137:1
  • Sesame oil is another example of an oil that is high in omega-6 but very low in omega-3.

7. Peanut Oil

  • Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio: 32:1
  • Peanut oil is high in omega-6 but lacks omega-3s, making it an unfavorable choice for balancing fatty acids.

8. Grapeseed Oil

  • Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio: 700:1
  • Grapeseed oil is one of the most omega-6 dominant oils, with an extreme lack of omega-3 content.

9. Canola Oil

  • Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio: 2:1
  • Canola oil is one of the better options for maintaining a more balanced omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, thanks to its higher omega-3 content.

10. Flaxseed Oil

  • Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio: 1:3
  • Flaxseed oil is the opposite of most seed oils, as it is rich in omega-3 and has a favorable ratio for reducing inflammation.

11. Hempseed Oil

  • Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio: 3:1
  • Hempseed oil is another oil that has a relatively balanced ratio of omega-6 to omega-3, making it a good choice for dietary balance.

12. Pumpkin Seed Oil

  • Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio: 114:1
  • While rich in nutrients, pumpkin seed oil is still very high in omega-6 compared to omega-3.

Why the Ratio Matters

A high omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, as seen in most seed oils, can contribute to inflammation in the body and is associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, obesity, and certain cancers. Ideally, a ratio closer to 1:1 or 4:1 (omega-6 to omega-3) is recommended for optimal health. Therefore, incorporating oils with a lower ratio, like canola or flaxseed oil, is preferable for balancing fatty acid intake.

If you’re looking for more balanced oils or alternatives, consider oils like olive oil (which, although low in omega-3, has a better health profile overall) or consuming fish oils rich in omega-3s to offset high omega-6 intake from seed oils..

Look after yourself and live with intention!
