Shedding the Past: Growing Through Downsizing After Divorce

I’m sitting paralysed on the kitchen floor. Around me are the memories of 20 years of marriage and raising my children. Looking around, I remember renovating this beautiful huge kitchen by stripping it back to the wooden walls and placing the timber on the floor. Whilst I never was a great handyman or builder, I took great joy in doing the work. I admit that, at times, professionals had to come after me to rectify some of my mistakes. But such is life. Now, nearly 20 years later, I’m about to sell my house, and as such, it is time to face the past by going through each item that has accumulated and to which I now need to say goodbye.

My thinking brain tells me that this is normal. The kids have left the house, and with me separating from my wife, my needs are far reduced. However, where do you start and where do you end? I’m swinging like a huge pendulum from “Throw it all away!” to “I wanna keep everything!”.

None of these options are sensible, but finding the right path in the middle is a challenge. I am certainly not alone in this situation. Virtually all of my friends have previously gone through similar situations and bear the emotional scars of reinventing themselves. I am not sure what that says about me, my friends, the society we live in, or the challenging times many of us face. Anyhow, everyone assures me that a brighter future lies ahead. However, right now, I am grieving, and this is a challenging part of my life.

Over the last few months, waves of fear, anxiety, and sadness have washed over me like tsunamis threatening to drown me. This has been overwhelming, and it helped me tremendously to break everything down into bite-sized steps. If you are going through hard times, then I hope this article will be of help to you. These steps helped me to make the journey just that little bit easier!

Step 1: Acknowledge Your Feelings

Objective: Understand and accept the emotions associated with letting go of possessions and downsizing.

  • Allow Yourself to Grieve: Recognize that it’s normal to feel sadness, loss, and grief when parting with belongings that hold sentimental value or memories.
    • Journaling: Write about your feelings to process emotions and clarify what specific items or memories are most difficult to let go of.
    • Talking to Friends or a Therapist: Share your thoughts with someone you trust to gain perspective and emotional support.
  • Practice Mindfulness: Engage in mindfulness exercises such as meditation or deep breathing to stay grounded and present, helping you navigate emotional turbulence.
    • Example Exercise: Spend 5-10 minutes daily focusing on your breath and acknowledging your emotions without judgment.

Step 2: Set Clear Goals and Intentions

Objective: Establish a vision for your future and how downsizing fits into this new chapter of your life.

  • Define Your Priorities: Identify what truly matters to you moving forward—whether it’s financial freedom, a simpler lifestyle, or new experiences.
    • Vision Board: Create a vision board that represents your goals and aspirations to visualize your future and stay motivated.
  • Clarify Your Intentions: Decide what you want to achieve through the process of letting go and downsizing. This could be finding peace, reducing clutter, or creating space for new opportunities.
    • Affirmations: Use positive affirmations such as “I am creating space for growth and new beginnings” to reinforce your intentions.

Step 3: Inventory and Categorize Your Belongings

Objective: Organize your possessions to make informed decisions about what to keep, sell, or donate.

  • Create an Inventory: List all your belongings, grouping them into categories such as furniture, clothing, electronics, and sentimental items.
    • Digital Tools: Use apps or spreadsheets to keep track of your inventory and categorize items efficiently.
  • Assess Each Item’s Value: Determine the practical and emotional value of each item. Ask yourself whether it serves a purpose in your future or holds sentimental significance.
    • The Three-Box Method: Sort items into three boxes: Keep, Sell, and Donate. This will streamline the decision-making process.

Step 4: Letting Go with Gratitude

Objective: Approach the process of letting go with a mindset of gratitude and appreciation.

  • Practice Gratitude: Reflect on the positive experiences and memories associated with your possessions, and express gratitude for the role they played in your life.
    • Gratitude Journal: Write down three things you are thankful for each day related to the items you are letting go of.
  • Hold a Letting Go Ceremony: Create a personal ritual to honor and release the past, such as lighting a candle or writing a farewell letter to significant items.
    • Example Ceremony: Gather items you are parting with and take a moment to thank each one before placing it in the sell or donate box.

Step 5: Selling and Donating Items

Objective: Effectively sell or donate items to support your downsizing goals and benefit others.

  • Research Selling Platforms: Explore various platforms to sell items, such as eBay, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or specialized apps for furniture or clothing.
    • Pricing Strategy: Set realistic prices based on the condition and market value of each item to ensure a quick sale.
  • Identify Charitable Organizations: Choose charities or local organizations that align with your values to donate items you no longer need.
    • Donation Drive: Organize a donation drive and invite friends or family to contribute items they no longer need.

Step 6: Embrace Minimalism and Simplification

Objective: Cultivate a minimalist mindset and simplify your living space to promote peace and clarity.

  • Adopt Minimalist Principles: Focus on keeping items that bring you joy and serve a purpose in your new life.
    • The KonMari Method: Apply Marie Kondo’s method by asking if each item sparks joy and only keeping those that do.
  • Create a Clutter-Free Environment: Arrange your remaining belongings in a way that maximizes space and reduces clutter.
    • Organizational Tools: Invest in storage solutions such as bins, shelves, and organizers to maintain a tidy and efficient living space.

Step 7: Redefine Your Space and Lifestyle

Objective: Redesign your living space to reflect your new chapter and personal growth.

  • Reimagine Your Home: Arrange your living space to support your goals and reflect your values. Create areas for relaxation, creativity, and productivity.
    • Interior Design: Consider seeking professional advice or inspiration online to redesign your space in a way that feels fresh and empowering.
  • Incorporate New Habits: Establish routines that support your personal growth and well-being, such as daily exercise, meditation, or reading.
    • Morning Routine: Start each day with a set of activities that energize and inspire you, setting a positive tone for the day.

Step 8: Focus on Personal Growth and Discovery

Objective: Use the downsizing process as an opportunity for self-discovery and personal development.

  • Explore New Interests: Engage in activities or hobbies you’ve always wanted to try but didn’t have time for.
    • Classes and Workshops: Attend local or online classes in subjects that interest you, such as art, cooking, or fitness.
  • Reflect on Your Journey: Take time to reflect on how far you’ve come and the lessons you’ve learned throughout this process.
    • Self-Reflection Exercises: Set aside regular time for self-reflection through journaling or meditation, focusing on your growth and achievements.

Step 9: Build a Supportive Community

Objective: Surround yourself with supportive individuals who uplift and inspire you.

  • Connect with Like-Minded People: Seek out groups or communities that share your interests or values, whether online or in person.
    • Social Groups: Join clubs, classes, or meetups to connect with others who can offer support and friendship.
  • Foster Existing Relationships: Strengthen bonds with friends and family who provide emotional support and encouragement.
    • Regular Gatherings: Organize regular get-togethers with loved ones to maintain strong connections and share experiences.

Step 10: Embrace New Beginnings

Objective: Approach this new chapter with optimism and openness to new opportunities.

  • Set New Goals: Define what you want to achieve in this next phase of life, whether it’s career advancement, personal development, or building new relationships.
    • SMART Goals: Set Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals to guide your actions and track your progress.
  • Celebrate Your Achievements: Acknowledge and celebrate the milestones you reach along your journey, no matter how small.
    • Reward System: Treat yourself to something special when you achieve a goal, reinforcing positive progress.

Bottomline

Downsizing and letting go of possessions during a divorce is a challenging yet transformative journey. By approaching this process with intention, gratitude, and a focus on personal growth, you can turn the experience into an opportunity for self-discovery and empowerment. Embrace the journey with an open heart, and you’ll find that letting go can pave the way for a brighter, more fulfilling future.

Look after yourself and live with intention!
